Question
Best Lures for Sydney Tuna? - Jamie Mackay?
Answer
Scent Blazer have designed and tested a heap of different colours and head shapes/sizes of lures for all types of Tuna at various times of the year so I’ll put it simply. The best way to determine what lure size/shape and colour to use can be a bit tricky as certain times of the Tuna season the fish will be eating certain size lures (bait). A great starting point will be the 91/2" / 24cm Scent Blazer Green Luminator Smoker Head as they work year round and you will also have the chance to raise a Striped Marlin using the same lure.
This lure in particular can be run in basically any position in the spread, as the head shape will work in all conditions.
Moving up a size in the Scent Blazer range a top Tuna lure is the Scent Blazer Green Mackerel - Medium Smoker Head, or the Purple Frigate - Medium Smoker Head, which are deadly on the big Southern Blue Fin Tuna!!
Tuna prefer a lure that doesn’t break the surface but keep in mind if they are in a school they will eat every lure in the spread! We run a daisy chain of Scent Blazer Mackerel Teasers loaded with the same baits as in your lures. We recently had all the lures in the spread eaten by big Southern Blue Fin up to 110kg, then the remainder of the school tried to eat the teasers at the back of the boat, amazing stuff!!
Tight Lines,
Andrew
